Shopping at your local farmers market is a different experience than that of a grocery store. For some this is a breath of fresh air (after all, it is outdoors!), and for some it feels intimidating. Here are some tips to follow for your visit to the market:
- Bring a few reusable bags. This will help you comfortably carry your purchases, reduce waste, and help keep costs down for our farmers.
- Browse before you buy. Take a lap around the market to see what everyone has to offer. Although vendors cannot sell until the bell rings at 9:00AM, you can preview their products before opening while everyone is setting up.
- Keep an open mind. The market is seasonal and local, meaning when it comes to produce and plants, you will only find what can be grown in our region during that time of year. This is a chance to get creative with cooking, substitutes, and enjoy better tasting food. Fresh and local is more delicious and more nutritious!
- Ask questions. Your farmers and producers know their products best. Want to know if something is Organic? Ask, “What are your growing methods?” Want to know how to prepare a certain cut of meat or produce item? Ask about it! This is one of the best bonuses of shopping at a farmers market. It’s OK if you don’t know what something is–the farmers market is a great learning experience for both adults and children.
- Cash is preferred by many, however the market Info Booth has a token system by which you can use Credit, Debit, & EBT/SNAP to shop at the market. EBT/SNAP and FMNP vouchers are matched!
