Garlic Scapes are the tender stem and flower bud of a hardneck garlic plant. Scapes first grow straight out of the garlic bulb, and then coil. Garlic Scapes is another very versatile vegetable. You can grill, sauté, puree them, and eat them raw or cooked. Anywhere you would use garlic you can use scapes. Their flavor is like a chive or scallion with a garlic flare. Here are a few ways to sneak them into your recipes.
- Chop into pieces and sauté in butter or oil for 5 to 6 minutes and serve like a green bean or put into a stir fry.
- Grill them and serve them with a mayo, olive oil, or balsamic vinegar.
- Make garlicky pesto in place of basil.
- Batter them in a Tempura batter and fry them. Serve with a sweet chili dipping sauce.
- Chop into pieces and sauté or steam the scapes then add them to omelets, quiches, or scrambled eggs.
